Getting Tested For International Travel

Table of Contents

As International Travel is slowly starting to resume once again around the world, it raises the question of Covid-19 Testing Before & After Travel. I recently booked flights to the United States from Canada, to attend the upcoming 🏁 NASCAR Races in Phoenix in early November 2021.

I just received an email from a close friend, who also has travel booked for this coming Fall and Winter. He asked about the requirements for testing for Canadians traveling internationally.

As International Travel begins, testing for travel varies for different parts of the world. As the pandemic situation changes, so will the requirements for testing.

Covid-19 Testing – Canada

As I do hope to travel to the United States this Fall, I decided to do research on what the present situation is for cross border travel at this time.

As luck had it, I discovered an excellent article recently written by one of our leading travel experts here on the west coast of 🍁 Canada.

Essential Travel Only Still Recommended

Covid-19 Testing

Our Canadian Government still has a travel advisory in effect, advising us not to be travelling at this time.

Having said this, travel agents are now swamped with bookings for both domestic and international travel.

This is because of the recent announcement from the government that fully vaccinated Canadian travelers are now exempt from quarantine requirements when returning to Canada.

Proof Of Negative COVID-19 PCR Test

However, at this time we are still required to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test before returning to Canada and must take a second test upon arrival.

The federal government will cover the cost of the arrival test kit.

All travelers are required to arrange and pay a heavy sum for having a pre-arrival test done. As mentioned above, each country has adopted their own policy. At this time, in order to enter the United States, I have to have an additional test done before catching my flight.

Having reluctantly gotten fully vaccinated, I’m hoping that when our borders open in the very near future, these tests will no longer be required for fully vaccinated individuals.

This is going to be a real pain in the butt and expensive as well!

Where To Get Covid-19 Testing Before & After Travel

Covid-19 Testing

I did a Google search for getting tested before and after travel for our upcoming Phoenix, Arizona flight.

There are outlets right at both airports that will do testing. Results can be obtained in 30 minutes, depending on how much you want to pay.

Cheaper prices are available, from a couple of hours to days depending on your urgency.  Prices for testing are outrageous at this time!

It’s obvious these companies are making the most and charging these high prices while they can. So right now if you want to travel internationally, it’s going to cost you! 💰

Dominican Republic Map

At this time Mexico and the Dominican Republic, two very popular international sun travel destinations for Canadians, have no test requirements for entering.

You still must be tested before returning to Canada!

Shoppers Drug Mart Logo

Shoppers Drug Mart in Canada at certain locations, also provide Covid-19 Testing for travel at this time.

Here’s an example of Pre Flight Testing at a Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport outlet;

✔ An Expedited RT-PCR COVID-19 Test costs $150 usd. (1-2 day test results)

✔ A Rapid COVID-19 Molecular NAAT Test costs $199 usd. (1 hour test results)

✔ A Rapid 1 Hour RT-PCR COVID-19 Test costs $399 usd.(30 minute test result)

So as you can see, it’s going to cost you dearly to get tested right now. Entry to and from the United States will require tests before you go and to be done no later than 72 hours before flights.

🤞 Let’s keep our fingers crossed these tight regulations will be lifted within the next few months.

For more detailed information on testing requirements and the type of tests accepted, I have listed the Government of Canada website below. I directed the link to the page outlining Testing For Travel.

Travel Covid-19 Medical Insurance

Getting Travel Medical is crucial, pandemic or not. I’ve always said if you can afford to travel, you can afford travel medical insurance.

Things have changed regarding coverage if one becomes ill from Covid-19 while away. As vacation travel is not considered essential at this time, most insurance companies will not cover you for this illness.

Be sure to check with your insurance provider to find out more. As an example, I did notice Pacific Blue Cross in Canada now offers a New Critical Illness Insurance policy for under $1/day cdn.

I’m remaining optimistic that in the next few months, these tight testing restrictions will be lifted for fully vaccinated individuals. I hope when our borders reopen once again, things will change for the better.

Stay tuned for future updates! 📰
